Central Coast’s burgeoning football reputation has received another boost with confirmation that Germany and England will be based locally during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™

In huge news for the region, the football association of Germany have elected to use the Central Coast Regional Sporting and Recreation Complex at Tuggerah as their team base camp, while England will be based at Central Coast Stadium Gosford.

It is a huge coup for the Central Coast with both sides serious contenders to go deep in the tournament. Germany is currently ranked third in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings with England just behind in 4th spot.

Germany are one of the most successful and consistent teams in women’s football having won two consecutive world titles in 2003 and 2007 as well as 8 European trophies. After a disappointing exit by their high standards at the Quarter-final stage in 2019, they will head to Australia in 2023 on a mission for global glory.

The 2023 Tournament will be England’s 6th appearance at a FIFA Women’s World Cup and comes off the back of an outstanding performance at Euro 2022 where the Lionesses won the final 2-1 at Wembley against a very committed German team.

A team base camp is a crucial pre-tournament decision as it is where the all-important training is done and where the squad will stay and unwind between matches.

With two venues shortlisted on the approved team base camp list, the Central Coast proved to be an appealing location for the teams who were impressed by the pitch standards including the recently upgraded floodlights at the Central Coast Regional Sporting and
Recreation Complex, the privacy offered, as well as the relative proximity to Sydney.

Council Administrator Rik Hart is delighted that the Central Coast was successful in both bids for a team base camp believing that the region is now gaining global recognition.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ is going to be huge for football and for Australia and we’re absolutely delighted that the Central Coast is going to play a part in its success.  

“It is wonderful news to end the year and is a vote of confidence in our sporting facilities. I am looking forward to welcoming England and Germany in 2023” Mr Hart said.

Council’s Director Community and Recreation Services Melanie Smith is delighted that the Central Coast Regional Sporting and Recreation Complex is gaining international recognition.

“When we opened the facility in 2019 the plan was for it become something very special for the Central Coast and something for everyone to be able to use from the casual grass roots athlete to the elite level performer,” Ms Smith said.

“We’re thrilled that we have been chosen as a home base and are confident that the two teams will have a first-class experience.

“Football is huge in our community and having international teams here will inspire youngsters to dare to dream,” she concluded.

The teams will have exclusive access to the Central Coast Regional Sporting and Recreation Complex from 1 July – 20 August 2023.
