As part of our commitment to maintaining quality water and sewer infrastructure across the region, Central Coast Water and Sewer have been undertaking works to refurbish the Vacuum Sewer System within Davistown, Tacoma and St Hubert’s Island.

Vacuum sewer systems are an effective sewer management option for flat landscapes. Instead of using gravity and pipes buried deep in the ground, this system utilises vacuum pressure to transport wastewater through our sewer network.

Director of Water and Sewer Jamie Loader said the system was being refurbished to ensure it operates well into the future.

“In recent years the systems would have experienced an increase in reactive maintenance to fix individual issues, with some sections going offline following major weather events.

“We are replacing key components within the existing sewer pots, as well as the installation of above ground pillars. Critical components will be relocated out of the sewer pot and into the pillar to ensure the systems function during major wet weather events.

“This solution will provide easy 24/7 access for maintenance and repair works when required and provides Council with an opportunity to improve how we manage our assets and more importantly providing an improved level of service to our customers.”

Central Coast Council Administrator Rik Hart said every year water utilities remove thousands of sewerage system blockages caused by wipes and other rubbish.

“Flushing anything other than the three P’s (poo, pee and toilet paper) may result in a sewer overflow in your home or a blockage in our sewerage system.

“It is important that everyone does their bit in ensuring our sewage network remains in tip top shape, by being mindful of what we flush.”

Vacuum systems require maintenance, if you hear any hissing or gurgling noises coming from the system or strong odours ensure you report them via Council’s website so it can be investigated.
