Toukley library launches Library@yourtime – extending access hours for users

Toukley library will be offering extended hours access from 1 July 2022, as part of a ‘Library@yourtime’ trial program.

This has been made possible through grant funding by a State Library of New South Wales Local Priority Grant.

The innovative program, which will be trialled for six months, will see technology monitor self-access, self-service loans and returns, internet computers as well as lighting, alarms, public announcements, and public safety.

Central Coast Council Unit Manager, Beth Burgess said the aim of the program is to enable users to have access to the library outside regular staffed library hours.

Library@yourtime will enable users to utilise the library during un-staffed hours, meeting the needs of commuters on their way to or from work, as well as students and families wishing to utilise the space and library services on weekends," Mrs Burgess said.

“The project aims to remove barriers to people who wish to use the library service, enabling the community to make full use of the service at times that suit them.

Library@yourtime complements the existing staffed hours, during which library members can receive help and guidance as required.”

Mrs Burgess said a community reference group will be set up to monitor the pilot program and provide feedback which will be assessed after the six-month period has ended.

“Participants of the program, who must be over the age of 18, must meet the terms and conditions of the program, including completing a building and safety induction course.

“Access will be via a swipe card and children under the age of 18+ must be accompanied by an inducted adult.”

Council Administrator, Rik Hart said the recent upgrades to the Toukley library, including a new roof and the installation of new LED lighting, will ensure the library offers a safe, modern space to library users.

“This new extended hours access trial is another example of how Council is working to accommodate the needs of the community and to fit in with their different lifestyles.”

The unstaffed access hours of Library@yourtime from 1 July 2022 will be:

  • Monday to Friday – 7.00am to 8.30am, and 5.00pm to 7.00pm
  • Saturday and Sunday – 7.00am to 7.00pm

All existing staffed hours at the Library will remain the same.
