Feel the magic of the new season as Laycock Street Community Theatre comes alive with two of William Shakespeare’s classics – A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Merchant of Venice – this spring.

Playing over two nights, on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 September, Melbourne City Ballet returns with their magical neoclassical ballet interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Suitable for all ages, this whimsical and enchanting Shakespearean adaption explores three different stories: the preparation of the wedding between Amazonian Queen and Athenian King; an arranged marriage dilemma between two Athenian couples, and the feud involving the King and Queen of the Fairies.

With a full cast of talented artists, dazzling costumes and beautiful sets, audiences are taken on a journey to the borders of Shakespeare’s Athens-Fairyland to experience the magic, mischief and love.

On Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 October, the dramatic performance of Bell Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice bursts onto the stage, ahead of its run at the Sydney Opera House.

This uncompromising production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Audience members are taken on a journey of love, mercy and justice; to tackle the biases and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.

Featuring three-time Helpmann Award Winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake), and Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland), the production is directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Belvoir’s Jasper Jones and Medea).

Central Coast Council’s Connected Communities Group Leader, Julie Vaughan, said Laycock Street Theatre was honoured to host the two productions of the some of the world’s most well-known classics.

“Shakespeare has the power to relate to all audiences of all ages,” said Ms Vaughan. “Even in today’s world, both of these plays have messages and teachings that we can all relate to.

“We are excited to bring these two magical productions to the Central Coast.

“Due to the popularity of Midsummers Night’s Dream, we have added a second show. We don’t want anyone to miss out.”
