It’s Local Government Week, which is a great chance to highlight some of the invaluable services Council provides to the community each and every day.

This year’s theme is ‘Our Council, Our Community’ and reflects how Council is closely connected to the community as well as the vital support and services we deliver that enhances people’s lives.

One such service is the provision of high quality early childhood care and education that supports the needs of local families.

We have been a dedicated childcare provider on the Central Coast for more than 30 years – supporting in excess of 40,000 families during this time.

We run eight centres across the Central Coast at Kanwal, Kariong, Niagara Park, Northlakes, Terrigal, Toukley, Wyong and Umina.

The families who attend our childcare centres know we are passionate about providing a nurturing and inspiring environment in which children can play, learn and explore.

There is a strong sustainability focus in each of the centres, which gives children the opportunity to learn about things like reducing waste through worm farms, compost bins, chicken-keeping and so much more.

Some centres even have their own herb and vegetable gardens and children enjoy helping maintain them. They get great enjoyment and satisfaction when the food they grow ends up in their daily cooked meals.

This daily cooked meal is a favourite feature with parents and includes fresh, cooked meals for the children planned and prepared by our qualified staff – so you don’t even have to pack a lunchbox – and the menu offers children an opportunity to try different foods.

We also offer quality care as well as teaching and learning programs guided by the Early Years Learning Framework. These programs are play based, and recognise the importance of communication and language (including literacy and numeracy) along with social and emotional development.

Our qualified staff have a number of educational programs in place to give children a super start to learning including our transition to school program which is linked with local primary schools and give the children confidence to take the next step into ‘big school’.

Importantly, Council’s childcare centres are not-for-profit services, which means any fees are directed straight back into providing more resources for the centre.

The centres are actively involved in the local community and work with schools, libraries and community groups as well as getting out and about, exploring the local area around the centres.

Being an integral part of Council, the centres work closely with other departments to give children in their care important tips on surf safety, recycling, road safety, and so much more.

While there are rooms set up for the children to learn with others their own age, they also get the opportunity to socialise with their siblings and children of all ages.

Our centres cater for working parents and are open between 7am and 6pm weekdays, and have the added benefit of not charging for public holidays.

Find out more about one of our centres by calling 4350 5181 (Kanwal, Northlakes, Toukley and Wyong) or 4325 8222 (Kariong, Niagara Park, Terrigal and Umina).

The Toukley and Kanwal centres are having an open day on Thursday 4 August from 9.30am to 11am - pop in for a chat with our friendly staff about care for your child.
