Central Coast Council is inviting residents to clear out unwanted hazardous chemicals from around the home and safely dispose of them for free at the Chemical CleanOut events this March.

Community members can drop off their chemicals for free between 9am - 3.30pm daily, on the following dates:

• Kincumber Waste Management Facility, Cullens Road, Kincumber on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 March 2023.
• Council's Long Jetty Depot, corner The Entrance and Wyong Road, Bateau Bay on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March 2023.

Council Unit Manager Waste and Resource Recovery, Andrew Pearce said these events are a great way to dispose of hazardous materials safely, whilst also protecting our local environment.

“Dumping chemicals, placing them in the bin or pouring them down the drain is not only an offence that attracts fines and penalties, but can also cause serious impacts to our environment by contaminating our waterways and landfill sites,” Mr Pearce said.

“I encourage locals to use this as an opportunity to declutter, clean and responsibly dispose of any unwanted, out-of-date or unused household chemicals that may be sitting in your home, garage or shed.

“Items such as pesticides, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, fluorescent globes and any unknown chemicals will be accepted for identification and disposal.”

It’s important for residents to remember that only household quantities are accepted for disposal at the Chemical CleanOut events. A 20-litre or 20-kilogram maximum container size per item applies, except for paints. Residents can drop off up to 100L of paint, however they must be in containers of 20L or less. 

We ask residents travelling to these events to handle chemicals safely and if possible, keep all chemicals in their original containers. This includes never mixing chemicals as dangerous reactions can occur.

Council Administrator, Rik Hart said the Chemical CleanOut events are just one of the many popular resource recovery initiatives offered to residents by Council. 

“With continuous record-breaking numbers for our Chemical CleanOut events each year, it’s clear that Central Coast residents are eager to do the right thing and keep hazardous materials out of landfill and I expect the upcoming events will be no different.”
