Flagging rights up for grabs in pre-season F3 Derby clash in Maitland

Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets go head to head tomorrow in Maitland. To add to the competitiveness of the match, Central Coast Council Mayor Jane Smith and Maitland City Council Mayor Loretta Baker have agreed to a wager, which will see the winner of the respective Council’s flag flown in the other Local Government area for the week.

The Mariners will of course represent Central Coast Council, while Maitland City Council will be represented by the Hunter based Newcastle Jets in the wager, which is reminiscent of the great State of Origin clashes.

Mayor Jane Smith said the whole of the Central Coast will be behind the Mariners in this first big clash for the season and with that support was confident of victory.

“There is always great rivalry between these two sides but I have to say the Mariners definitely have the edge with all the hype and interest they are generating right now,” Mayor Smith said.

“There is huge interest in football at the moment and this is a great opportunity to really grow the game in the community.

“I will be there in person to cheer them on and encourage Coasties to do the same – this is the start of a great season for the Mariners and football on the Coast.”

Maitland Mayor, Councillor Loretta Baker said the City is really excited to host the Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners here in Maitland.

“The whole city will behind the Jets and I’m looking forward to seeing a sea of red and blue in the grandstand on Saturday,” Councillor Loretta Baker said.

‘The wager between ourselves and Central Coast Council adds an extra incentive to cheer on our local teams and I am confident the Jets will get the victory.

‘We have a wonderful football community here in Maitland, so it is fantastic that we can bring elite football to our local players and supporters.’

The game will kick off at 3pm at the Maitland No 1 Sportsground. For more details and to secure tickets to the match visit maitlandevents.com.au
