Council waives green waste fees for properties west of M1 Motorway in response to current bush fire threat

Central Coast Council will be absorbing the costs of green waste disposal for properties west of the freeway at its Buttonderry and Woy Woy Waste Management Facilities until 31 January 2020.

The decision has been made to allow for properties that do not pay for or have access to domestic green waste collection services, to dispose of up to four tonnes of green waste for free.

Mayor Lisa Matthews said she was pleased that Council was providing tangible support for residents impacted by this unprecedented fire threat on the Central Coast.

“Residents have been asked to prepare their properties, by the Rural Fire Service, in the face of these fires and in doing so have generated a lot of green waste which they have found challenging to get rid of,” Mayor Matthews said.

“They have enough to deal with at the moment and at least we have taken this concern out of their hands.”

To be eligible, residents or their contractors must show evidence from where the green waste was generated. This may include a resident’s drivers’ licence, a rates notice, or a bill from the property showing the owners details and property address.

Council Director Roads, Transport, Drainage and Waste is encouraging properties east of the freeway that have access to existing green waste collections to take advantage of kerbside collections before the next round of six free kerbside collections are available in February 2020.

“We have a well-established household collection service for properties east of the freeway, which we are encouraging residents to utilise,” Mr Bolgoff said.

“Along with their green-lidded vegetation waste bin, residents also have access to six free kerbsides every 12 months that can be used for bulk household waste or vegetation.

“On average households only use one or two free collections a year, so take advantage of these free collections.”

Properties east of the freeway can obtain kerbside guidelines and make a booking via 1Coast.com.au or call 1300 1coast (1300 126 278) from 8am-5pm weekdays.

Mayor Matthews also reminded the community to remain vigilant, stay up to date, look out for each other – family, friends, neighbours and particularly our elderly residents to make sure everyone is safe.

“I am so proud of how the community have pulled together and looked out for each other during these trying times,” Mayor Matthews added.

“We can’t thank our firefighters enough for their efforts in protecting our community and our heart goes out to those in our community in the path of those fires and know that we are with you.

“I thank everyone involved in the fire effort, the Rural Fire Service, Council staff, community organisations and businesses who are helping with supplies and evacuation centres for residents affected.”
