20/11/2019Central Coast Council is urging residents to be as prepared as possible and to remain vigilant as the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) continues to fight and monitor the Gospers Mountain fire west of the Central Coast.
Mayor Lisa Matthews said it is vital that all Central Coast community members regularly refer to the information provided by the RFS.
“The RFS is the lead agency for bush fires and we must all refer to the RFS for the latest advice on fires currently burning and for information on how to ensure we are as prepared as possible,” Mayor Matthews said.
“At this point in time it is particularly important that our residents west of the M1 are prepared and vigilantly monitoring RFS advice regarding the Gospers Mountain fire.
“Please download and use the RFS ‘Fires Near Me’ mobile phone app if you haven’t already. This is an invaluable resource that allows you to set your ‘Watch Zones’ and receive alerts on fires burning near your area.
“You will also find the latest advice and fire preparation information on the RFS website – rfs.nsw.gov.au.
“If you are on social media, you should follow the NSW RFS and the NSW RFS Central Coast.
“Listening to local radio is also an important way to say informed, particularly ABC Central Coast, which is our region’s official broadcaster during emergencies.
“The RFS is doing an incredible job for communities across NSW and we can all help by getting ready and staying ready.”
During a bush fire situation, Council’s role is to help share important information provided by the RFS through Council’s communication channels.
Council will provide direct support to the RFS as required, including through supplying resources and assets.
Council will also keep the community informed of any impact a bush fire is having on Council services and assets including Bushland Reserves, Picnic Areas and Walking Tracks (which are automatically closed during Total Fire Bans), Child Care Centres, Cemeteries, Roads, Water and Sewer, and Waste.
