19/07/2016Central Coast Council Libraries are continuing to inspire a love of learning and reading in the community with the installation of two all-weather Little Free Libraries on the shores of Tuggerah Lakes.
There are now 15 of these free, accessible libraries across the Coast as a result of the overwhelming positive community response to their use.
Council’s Section Manager Library Services, Ms Andrea Edwards, said this was just one of the many ways libraries are delivering free and affordable resources to the community, beyond the doors of their branches.
"The newly installed Little Free Libraries are located at Saltwater Creek Reserve, Long Jetty and Canton Beach. They are the first of the all-weather versions to be installed in the northern end of the Coast,” Ms Edwards said.
“At Saltwater Creek Reserve, the free library will complement the many activities already available including a regional play space with an all access swing, mini BMX track, barbecues and picnic facilities, open reserve, free Wi-Fi and a boat ramp to access Tuggerah Lakes.
“These libraries are all about supporting learning, education and recreational opportunities for the community,” Ms Edwards added.
“The concept means anyone can stop and pick up a book to read or drop in a book or two for the community to share.
“By increasing the availability of books we’re looking to foster the value of reading and increase literacy skills in our community, helping to develop an understanding of people, places and culture.
“Not only this, these free book exchanges also create a sense of community by bringing people together to share something positive.”
Little Free Libraries are available across the Coast in the following locations:
- Farm Gate Café, North Wyong
- Kibble Park, Gosford
- YesterYear Hair Salon, Tuggerawong
- Gosford Smart Work Hub
- Gosford Hospital Emergency Department
- Peruch Avocado Farm – Wisemans Ferry Road, Somersby
- Burns Park, Gosford
- Mingaletta, Umina Beach Community Hall
- Peninsula Recreation Precinct
- Kariong and Kincumber Youth centres
- Wyoming Community Centre
- Rotary Park, Terrigal (anticipated to be available August 2016)
“We’re currently scoping out open space areas to place other all-weather Little Free Libraries in the North of the region and seeking interest from organisations or businesses who would like to host their own book exchange,” Ms Edwards said.
Those interested in getting involved and hosting their own Little Free Library are encouraged to contact Council’s North Library Services Team on 4350 5233 or the Place Making team (Gosford Office) on 4325 8222.
Note: Residents are reminded that the carparks at Saltwater Creek Reserve are currently closed while much needed upgrade works are taking place. Parking is available across the Central Coast Highway at the Lions Park (aka Rocket Park) as well as along Tuggerah Parade and the adjoining streets.
