05/11/2019In a NSW first, the Central Coast will become part of the “Love Food Community” working to tackle food waste.
Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch today announced $210,000 for Central Coast Council to become one of the first four communities in NSW to deliver a two-year, community-wide approach to reducing food waste.
“Funding will support activities to reduce food waste in homes, businesses, pubs, clubs, resorts, aged care facilities and hotels across our region,” Mr Crouch said.
“It will reach at least 17,000 households and 500 businesses in the first ever whole-of-community approach to prevent food waste in NSW.
“This is a practical environmental measure and I congratulate Council for securing the funding for this initiative. I’m excited by the prospect of our region leading the way in addressing this global issue on a local level.”
Central Coast Council Mayor Lisa Matthews said Council and the community are committed to protecting the environment and reducing waste and this funding would ensure the Coast takes the lead in tackling the big issue of food waste.
“Food waste makes up over 30% of household waste on the Coast. Reducing this amount will not only save valuable landfill space but help household budgets too,” Mayor Matthews said.
“This funding will ensure our community have all the tools they need to reduce waste and make a positive contribution to the Central Coast.”
Education material will be launched by Council in early 2020.
The successful grant is funded through the NSW Government’s $105.5 million Organics Infrastructure Fund and forms part of the NSW Government’s commitment to halve food waste by 2030. For more information, go to: www.lovefoodhatewaste.nsw.gov.au
