Celebrating NAIDOC Week on the Central Coast

NAIDOC Week takes place from 3 -10 July 2022 and is a significant time for First Nations People to celebrate their history, culture, and achievements.

Central Coast Council is honoured to contribute to the celebrations with an official flag raising ceremony.

The NAIDOC Week theme for 2022 is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’, which highlights the long history our First Nations People have dedicated to using their voice for change. In 2022 there is a real momentum for the rights of First Nations People, to Bridge the Gap in health and social outcomes and for genuine reconciliation towards a stronger community.

The Central Coast community is invited to attend the official Flag Raising Ceremony held Monday 4 July at 9.30am outside Council’s Wyong Administration Building, Wyong to mark the start of the event week and celebrate some of our emerging First Nations young people.

Council Unit Manager Community and Culture Glenn Cannard said it’s important the community recognises the contribution of First Nations People this NAIDOC Week, and celebrate their enduring culture.

“Council is honoured to be hosting the official Flag Raising Ceremony for 2022 and invites the community to get involved in the additional week-long program of NAIDOC events happening across the Coast to celebrate the rich culture of our First Nations People," Mr Cannard said.

“It is vital the Central Coast community come together in recognising the unique and priceless cultural knowledge held by our First Nations residents.”

The official Flag Raising Ceremony will commence with an Acknowledgement of Country, with the Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags to be formally raised in recognition. The event will continue in Council’s Function room with a First Nations art exhibition and speeches followed by a morning tea.

Celebrations will continue across the Central Coast with several activities and events scheduled across the community, including the Darkinjung NAIDOC Ball 2022 and Darkinjung LALC Golf Day presented by Darkinjung Aboriginal Land Council, NAIDOC Nylon II presented by Barang Regional Alliance & Naughty Noodle Fun Haus, NAIDOC Community Day hosted by Nunyara Aboriginal Health and Central Coast Local Health District and more.
