Beach safety warning: stay away from impacted areas, The Entrance North Beach

Council has issued a strong warning to residents and visitors to stay off The Entrance North Beach, north of the Wyuna Street access way and south of The North Entrance Surf Life Saving Club due to serious safety risks.

The foreshore of The Entrance Beach was significantly impacted from dangerous surf conditions, strong winds and high tides from last Friday which continued through the weekend.  This has created steep escarpments and exposed structures – from both private property and temporary revetment wall structures, such as rocks, and concrete boulders.

These structures are at risk of falling to the sand area below and creating a serious hazard for anyone in the vicinity on the beach or on the structure or land above.  Even areas where there are no structures but significant vertical sand escarpments need to be avoided as collapse could cause serious injury for anyone in the vicinity, whether below or on top of the erosion scarp.

Bulk debris has also been swept into the sea, so advice is to be aware of submerged potentially hazardous items, and as always, only swim between the flags.

Whilst the weather and ocean conditions appear to be much calmer, the risks at the damaged foreshore areas remain.

Beach access points have been closed off with Council barricades and warning signs, however over the weekend we have witnessed people walking in these areas, climbing on the structures, and walking along escarpments which can drop up to 6m.

Council continues to work closely with NSW SES to inspect the site, assess risks and works to be undertaken whilst liaising and supporting affected residents that own properties along Curtis Pde.

ADVICE
•    Stay away from impacted areas as waves can be unpredictable and areas that have had coastal water damage
•    Please keep personal safety front-of-mind and remain behind any barriers that our crews have put in place in high risk areas.
•    Do not intentionally collapse eroded beach escarpments - this is both dangerous and could cause further risk to properties in the immediate area
