Wisemans Ferry Road update: No longer requires temporary closure due to excessive rainfall

Construction works on Wisemans Ferry Road have advanced to the point where a section of the road will no longer need to be temporarily closed due to heavy rainfall. Beginning in September 2024, this site’s works have successfully stabilised the embankment and roadway. This is great news for the impacted local community and all users of Wisemans Ferry Road.

This is part of the major $28.3million grant-funded program of remediation and betterment works at 40 sites between Spencer and Wisemans Ferry Landing, which have experienced multiple landslips and widespread damage due to natural disasters and storm events.

Our program of works prioritised construction on the section of the road which had the greatest impact on the local community and the drivers who rely on this key route in and out of the area. This site initially incurred damage in 2012 and since that time has been functioning as only a single traffic lane with reduced speed limits. It sustained further damage during the 2022 natural disaster event and as a result has been subject to vehicle load limits along with temporary full road closures during significant rainfall events.

The first stage of works at this site focused on stabilising the lower embankment and reinforcing the concrete structure which has been pinned back into the natural rock layers under the roadway. With this now complete, the road has been tested and is safe to remain open during wet weather events. The next steps involve reinstating two fully functional road lanes, with the site expected to be completed by March 2025. Load limits and reduced speed restrictions remain in place where signposted.

The road surfaces at this site, along with several others, will be covered with a temporary seal as construction continues. The final road pavement resurfacing and line marking are scheduled for completion throughout 2025 and 2026.

Specialist contractors will progressively carry out works across the remaining sites on Wisemans Ferry Road, with full completion expected by 2026 (weather depending).

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW government Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and through the Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package

Residents will receive notification when construction works are scheduled to commence which impact access to private properties.
