Council is continuing to improve accessibility for public transport users through our Bus Stop Improvement Program.

We are improving access at 43 bus stops this financial year, including locations at Bateau Bay, Booker Bay, East Gosford, Erina, Ettalong Beach, Hamlyn Terrace, Gorokan, Noraville, Mardi and Springfield.

Works at each site will include the installation of a new concrete boarding pad, tactile markers, or a link to an existing footpath or installation of a pedestrian ramp. Where possible, seating or a bus shelter is also provided if warranted and as budget permits.

Everyone deserves to be able to participate in day-to-day community life. Ensuring accessible bus stops are provided for people living with a disability is essential to make the Coast more accessible, inclusive and liveable.

These bus stop accessibility improvements are part of Council’s continuous program to ensure that each stop meets Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requirements placed by Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002, and a delivery of actions from Council’s Access and Inclusion Action Plan.

FAQs

  • How does Council decide which locations will have works to improve accessibility?

Council considers a number of factors when determining which bus stop locations will be next to receive works to improve accessibility. Such considerations include: the number of people using the bus stop, traffic volumes on the adjacent road, and proximity to schools, hospitals, town centres, commercial/business areas and beaches, parks and reserves.

  • Why doesn’t every bus stop have shelter and seating / how do you choose which ones?

This project is focused on improving accessibility of bus stop locations so all residents and visitors in these localities can access public transport and travel throughout the region. Where possible, seating or a bus shelter is also provided if warranted and as budget permits.

  • How to report issues with bus stops?

Issues with bus stops can be reported via Council’s online Customer Service Centre or via phone on 4306 7900, for consideration and action, if warranted.
