06/10/2023The aim of sewage treatment is to clean and sanitise wastewater before it is reintroduced into the environment. Odour management is a common complaint associated with sewer treatment plants.
Central Coast Council Water and Sewer are allocating approximately $35 million towards the upgrades of the Bateau Bay Sewage Treatment Plant to not only futureproof the asset but help address the presence of odour.
October 2024 update
The works associated with the Bateau Bay Sewage Treatment Plant Odour Control Upgrade Project are now complete.
This includes the following works under the contract: -
• Design Works associated with the odour control facility;
• Modifications to the Inlet Works extraction points;
• All works associated with the new Odour Control Facility including a new stack;
• All concrete works;
• All mechanical works; and
• Remediation works associated with both Primary Sedimentation Tanks.
Whilst this concludes the works associated with the primary sources of odours emulating from the Plant, Council is currently investigating potential odours other sources, which include the Trickling Filters and some infrastructure.
Council would like to thank you for your patience whilst the Odour Control Upgrade works have been progressing.
Please continue to notify Council should you experience sewer odours within the vicinity of the Bateau Bay STP to help Council identify any additional sources of odours.
April 2024 update
Works are progressing well on the Bateau Bay Sewage Treatment Plant Odour Control Upgrade Project following the completion of the first stage back in December 2023.
The March update on the progress towards completion of the proposed works under the contract include: -
- Design Works associated with the odour control facility are complete
- Modifications to the Inlet Works extraction points are completed
- The fabrication, supply & installation works associated with the Odour Control Facility including the stack and ductwork has commenced
- Concrete foundations works are scheduled to be completed by early April
- Mechanical works are scheduled to be completed by mid-August 2024
- Remediation works associated with the Primary Sedimentation No2 are completed.
The Project remains on track for commission with an estimated construction completion date of September 2024.
December update
Works to address the odour facilities at Bateau Bay sewage treatment plant are powering along with the first stage of works completed, ready for the next stage to commence early 2024.
The first stage of works included replacing the Activated Carbon within the existing odour control facility, increasing the chemical dosing systems at neighbouring sewer pump stations and increasing ongoing odour monitoring at Bateau Bay Sewage Treatment Plant.
The December update on the proposed works under the contract include:
Upgrading and renewing the existing odour control unit within the Inlet Works - currently in design phase.
Installing covers to various flow managing devices - covers are currently being constructed.
Rectifying the bridge within Primary Sedimentation Tank No2 - plans to commence re-assembling the rotating bridge components underway.
Installing new odour covers within Primary Sedimentation Tank No1 - currently in design phase.
Upgrading and refurbishing the existing Odour Control Facility servicing both Primary Sedimentation Tanks - currently in planning phase.
Completion date for Odour Control Systems is anticipated for Mid-2024.
September update
Council has committed to upgrades to the odour control systems at the Bateau Bay Sewage Treatment Plant. The initial short-term commitments made to the local community in July have been completed. These included:
- Replacing the Activated Carbon within the existing odour control facility
- Increasing the chemical dosing systems at the neighbouring Sewage Pumping Stations (SPS’s), and
- Increasing & ongoing odour monitoring at the BBSTP.
The next stage of the project involved Council engaging Gongues Constructions to undertake the Design and Construction of the Bateau Bay STP Odour Control Facility Upgrade. This has occurred and Gongues have begun the project which has an estimated construction completion date of September 2024.
The works within the contract include:
- Upgrading and renewing the existing odour control unit within the Inlet Works,
- Installing covers to various flow managing devices,
- Rectifying the bridge within Primary Sedimentation Tank No2,
- Installing new odour covers within Primary Sedimentation Tank No1 (similar to what is within Primary Sedimentation Tank No2 – see below), and
- Upgrading and refurbishing the existing Odour Control Facility servicing both Primary Sedimentation Tanks.
