Administrator’s message – Look out for a mate this R U OK? Day
R U OK Day 2023

Council is proud to be taking part in mental health awareness campaign R U OK? Day again this year on Thursday 14 September.

R U OK? Day encourages people to ask a friend, family member, colleague, or neighbour the simple question, ‘Are you okay?’ and be prepared to provide support and encourage action.

This message couldn’t be more important for our region, as the Central Coast has the highest number of deaths by suicide in comparison with other health districts in Australia, and nearly half of all Australians are expected to experience some form of mental illness during their lifetime.

The Coast is known for its strong community spirit, and Council is committed to strengthening our community and using our voice to help address social health issues that impact our local residents.

Earlier this year, Council partnered with Central Coast Surf Life Saving Clubs to upskill young leaders to create ‘safe places’ for starting a conversation about mental health. Some of those volunteers shared their experience and messages for R U OK? Day in a short film that can be viewed at the link below.

It’s important to remember that you don’t need to be an expert to reach out, and starting a conversation could be as simple as:

  1. Asking ‘are you okay?’
  2. Listening
  3. Encouraging action
  4. Checking in

R U OK? Day is a timely reminder that a little support can go a long way.
